I read a very practical writing in a scope of hospital staffs: doctors, nurses, and administarational personnels. That story goes something like this. The narrator is a doctor, also a CEO of that hospital. And he was trying to organize his staffs, whom are encouraged by a promotional ladder more effectively and transparently, based on an assumption that people are mostly encouraged by motivation. However, it turned out that not many were influenced by motivational matters and autonomous environments but most preferred to get paid more. He admitted that it was hard for him to accept this result at the first sight. But eventually, he got away with this, supported by a competent and expertised personnel.
That stroy reminds me the old school days while I was searching for a lot of motivational theories very seriously, based on almost the identical assumption. Motivation versus reward was a quite curios topic that I was interested in back then.
Now I believe I have an answer, don't I ?
